About Kundalini Yoga and classes

What is Kundalini Yoga?

Kundalini Yoga classes combine movement, posture, breathing, meditation, mantra and relaxation. In my classes, I invite you to explore these elements gradually, observe how you feel and adapt the intensity to your abilities.

How does Kundalini Yoga differ from other forms of yoga?

Different yoga traditions use similar elements, but their sequence and emphasis vary. Kriyas — specific exercise sequences — have an important place in Kundalini Yoga, alongside connecting movement with breath, attention and sometimes mantra. It is more than stretching.

Can I come if I have never practised yoga?

Yes, you can join my classes without previous yoga experience. Tell me before we begin that this is your first time. I will explain how the practice works and help you choose a version that suits you.

Do I need to be flexible and physically fit?

You do not need to wait until you reach a particular level of flexibility or fitness. Begin with what you can do now and do not compare yourself with others. Before class, tell me about any movement limitations so we can discuss suitable adaptations.

What usually happens in a Kundalini Yoga class?

A class usually includes tuning in, breathing practice, warm-up, kriya, relaxation and meditation. The order and duration may vary with the theme. My classes also make space for sound and calm rest after practice.

What is a kriya?

A kriya is a specific practice sequence that can include postures, movement, breathing, focused attention and sound. Each exercise has its own instructions and duration. The teacher helps you explore the sequence and understand how to practise within your abilities.

What is a mantra, and do I need to be able to sing?

A mantra is a repeated sound, word or phrase used in practice and meditation. No singing experience or special voice is needed. If it is new to you, you can first listen, learn the words and join in a way that feels comfortable.

How should I prepare for my first class?

Choose comfortable clothing that allows free movement and arrive a little early so we can meet. Before your first class, write to me to check whether you should bring your own mat and blanket. Also tell me about any limitations that may affect your participation.

About breathing practices and booking

Which breathing practice should I begin with?

Begin by observing your natural breath and breathing gently and steadily. Sit comfortably and relax your shoulders. You do not need to breathe as deeply as possible — what matters is that the breath feels free and unforced.

Do I need previous yoga experience?

No previous yoga experience is needed to observe your breath or try gentle breathing. Learn fast techniques and prolonged breath holds gradually, with a teacher.

How long should I practise at first?

Begin with a short, comfortable period — for example, one to three minutes of calm breathing. This is a guide, not an obligation. If you feel well, you can gradually extend your practice; different techniques have different suggested durations.

Can I practise breathing while sitting on a chair?

Yes, you can practise gentle breathing on a chair. Place your feet on the floor, find comfortable support and let your spine be upright without tension. You do not have to sit cross-legged on the floor.

What should I choose for a calm break after work?

Begin with gentle, steady breathing without holds. Allow yourself to move from the pace of the day to a calmer rhythm. If you already know alternate nostril breathing and find it pleasant, you may choose its simple version without holds.

Do I have to count seconds while breathing?

No. Counting can help you follow a rhythm, but it should not create tension. At first, you can simply observe the inhale and exhale. If you count, choose a comfortable rhythm and do not force the breath to become longer.

Does every practice need a breath hold?

No, many breathing practices can be done without holds. One-Minute Breath is an advanced technique learned gradually. If holding your breath creates discomfort, return to natural breathing and choose a practice without holds.

What should I do if I feel dizzy or unwell during practice?

Stop the technique, remain in a comfortable, safe position and allow your breath to return to its natural rhythm. Do not push through discomfort or continue rapid breathing. If you do not feel better or symptoms recur, contact a healthcare professional.

Is Breath of Fire suitable for everyone?

No. Do not practise Breath of Fire during pregnancy, when dizzy or panicky, with uncontrolled high blood pressure, or while recovering from surgery or serious illness. If you are unsure whether it is suitable, discuss it with your doctor and teacher before practising.
